GENDER EQUALITY & ABORTION

Pete firmly stands for women’s choice and believes that abortion care is included within, but not limited to, reproductive healthcare. He also recognizes and will promote policies to address the racial disparities that run throughout women’s healthcare and gender equality. Pete has made it consistently clear that he values women’s voices, women’s experiences, and rigorously supports gender equality, both in word and action. His mayoral and campaign staff are over half women.

JOURNALISM

Abortion:

Vox: "Pete Buttigieg Shuts Down Conservative Talking Point About Abortion Rights" - "Buttigieg’s response highlights just how much conservative critiques of abortion rights have focused far more on fear-mongering than they do on addressing the realities of when people have abortions."

Huffpost: "Pete Buttigieg: Men Need To Stand Up For Abortion Rights, Too" - "“I think it’s particularly important from a political stance for men to stand up,“ he said. “First, it’s the right thing to do. Second, because whenever somebody’s freedom is being suppressed, you never know if you’re going to be next.”

Huffpost: "Pete Buttigieg: ‘I Trust Women To Draw The Line’ On Their Own Abortions" - "So, let’s put ourselves in the shoes of a woman in that situation. If it’s that late in your pregnancy, that means almost by definition you’ve been expecting to carry it to term,” Buttigieg said. “We’re talking about women who have perhaps chosen the name, women who have purchased the crib, families that then get the most devastating medical news of their lifetime, something about the health or the life of the mother that forces them to make an impossible, unthinkable choice. That decision [to have an abortion] is not going to be made any better, medically or morally, because the government is dictating how that decision should be made.”

Women's Rights:

South Bend Tribune: "Buttigieg seeks new paid parental leave benefit for city of South Bend employees" (Sep 2017) - "We think it's the right thing to do," Buttigieg said. "We think it establishes us as pro-family, and shows support for parents and for the idea that parents should be able to participate in the workforce if they want to." Buttigieg said he thinks the city "leading by example" can motivate other area employers to do the same.

Supporting Women:

South Bend Tribune: "Equality comments by Notre Dame's Muffet McGraw's go viral on social media" - " South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a potential presidential candidate for 2020, also took to Twitter to applaud McGraw, calling it "a powerful statement from a leader I admire." Trans Women:

PBS News Hour: "What does Pete Buttigieg believe? Where the candidate stands on 7 issues" - "Buttigieg favors passing the Federal Equality Act, an amendment to existing civil rights legislation that would give federal non-discrimination protections to LBGTQ people. He opposes the Trump administration’s ban on transgender people serving in the military. He also supports gender reassignment surgery for transgender people in prison."

Out Magazine: "Pete Buttigieg Calls for ‘War on Trans Americans’ to End" - "He also spoke out against what he calls “the war on trans Americans” that terrorizes trans children, even in their own schools."

Women of Color:

[James] Clyburn [of South Carolina], to putting a greater emphasis on wages because we know that women of color stand disproportionately to benefit from policies like an increased federal minimum wage to taking maternal health and infant mortality more seriously knowing that it is at crisis level in the African American community relative to how it shows up when you just look at the population as a whole."

Acknowledging Male Privilege:

Vox: "Pete Buttigieg makes the case for “democratic capitalism”" - "Well, if somebody is pointing out that there are advantages — many of them unfair — that go along with being male in our society and in our politics, then I completely agree."
